Malcolm Palmer, 62, turned on the mother of his three children after she became hooked on the violent Grand Theft Auto driving game.

He was forced to sleep on a sofa in their conservatory as Carol Cannom, 46, stayed up all night with the 37-inch plasma television screen she brought into their room for her all-night gaming sessions.

The couple from Long Sutton, Lincolnshire. had been together for 30 years but their relationship soured after they bought the console for their 10-year-old son James.

He would play on the computer until midnight, after which Ms Cannom would take over, regularly staying up until five or six in the morning, Lincoln Crown Court was told.

1 in 3 British men would prefer to play video games than sleep with their partner, with 72% claiming they’d shun their missus for the night to play a new release.

From a study of 1130 British men, of those in relationships, 32% that said they would prefer to play video games gave reasons ranging from their “partner being hard to please” to the prospect being “not as much fun” as gaming.

China’s anti-addiction efforts would be wasted here

Last week, China announced it had gotten a firm grip on video game addiction and believed to have it under control.

Big news anywhere in the world but especially in China, where the bizarre story of a 26-year-old man dying from 15 days of non-stop gaming bounced through gamer forums for weeks. Before that, a South Korean man perished following cardiac arrest said to have resulted from 50 continuous hours of gaming.

Game Guy understands the compulsion; he has lost big chunks of whole days while wandering deep through virtual worlds, much to the chagrin of his wife, who has begun calling video gaming his “mistress.” (One time, GG was late to his own birthday party because of excessive indulgence and the inability to even check his watch.)

She might be supportive then of China’s efforts to clamp down on overuse. According to Xinhuanet.com, that nation’s Youth Social Service Center reports gaming addiction among people 18 and under has dropped 7 percent between 2007 and 2008.

Amazing. But how was this done?

The Chinese government has reported that measures it has been taking to counter what it perceives as online games addiction in the country’s youth has been a success.

Communicating through the state news agency Xinhua, the government said that the number of online gamers under 18 in 2008 has declined to 15 per cent of survey respondents - a 7 per cent drop from the previous year’s 183 million….

Defense attorneys for 17-year-old Daniel Petric, who stands accused of killing his mother and shooting his father in the head, argued yesterday that the teen’s video game addiction directly led to the incident.

In order to support Petric’s insanity plea, his lawyers spent Tuesday building up his video game addiction, with his sister testifying that he became addicting following being housebound due to a staph

infection following a serious skiing accident. Another character witness, Daniel’s 17-year-old friend Jonathan Johnson, explained that Petric was so obsessed with the Halo games that he would spend large amounts of time at Johnson’s house playing them. One marathon session took place a week before the shooting, during a time when Petric’s father had kicked him out of the house over an argument following the fight.
